Trey McIntyre's Arrantza Goes on the Road
In 2010, Trey McIntyre was commissioned to create
a ballet for Jaialdi that was called Arrantza. If you were not
able to attend the event then, you now have another chance to enjoy this
unique performance. As a non-Basque McIntyre relied on the local
Basque community and dancers to give him, and the Trey McIntyre Project
dancers, a deeper understanding of the Basque culture and its dance.
The result is a fusion of traditional Basque dance and contemporary ballet
that pays tribute to Basques in the homeland and in the US. Upcoming
tour dates include:
4/9/13 - Olympia, WA Washington Center for the
Performance Arts
4/11-13/13 - Seattle, WA UW World Series – Meany
Hall
4/18-19/13 - Santa Monica, CA The Broad Stage
4/26-4/27/13 - Fort Lauderdale, FL Broward Center
for the Performing Arts
5/3-4/13 - Santa Fe, NM The Lensic Performing
Arts Center

Bernart Etxepare School's
We
have also heard from the teachers, parents and students at Bernart Etxepare
Public School in Pamplona- Iruñea who need our help. This year they
are in charge of organizing an annual event that is called
Sortzen-Ikasbatuaz whose goal is to boost the Basque language and Basque
public schools. To promote this event they have started a campaign
called, “Nik ere putz eginen dut” (I will blow too) demonstrating the power
that they are putting behind Euskera. As part of the campaign, they
are requesting Basques all over the world to submit photos and/or videos of
folks saying the phrase, provided here phonetically – “neek ere poots
egeenen doot” and blowing.

CBS Student Saitua Retraces Footsteps of Basque Sheepherders
Iker Saitua, Ph.D. student in his second year at
the Center for Basque Studies is pursuing a degree in Basque Studies with an
emphasis in history. During Christmas break, Iker decided that he
should retrace the steps that so many sheepherders took when they came to
this country. He really felt that it was important to do, to better
understand what they must have gone through, even though he feels his was a
much easier trip. With a one-way ticket to NY, train maps and a lot of
courage, he set out to do just that. The Elko Daily published an
article yesterday about his journey that we would like to share with you
here.
