This week we were contacted by the folks at EPA FILM WEEK in Holland, a
non-profit group that has been created by Basque people interested in
promoting Basque culture through cinema in Amsterdam. They have put together
a film festival that will take place May 30-June 2, 2013 and will include
eight feature-length films. Each screening will be preceded by a showing of
various short films as well. In their own words, “The aim is to share the
perspectives that Basque culture provides, and to see how the stories of our
cinema can cross borders.” For a full program

Basque Will Written in Terranova in 1563
Discovered
There is also big news coming out of Canada. Researcher/historian Dr.
Michael Barkham has discovered the oldest civil document in Canada, and
North America (outside of Mexico). In his research on Basque cod-fishers and
whalers, Barkham came across the last will and testament of Domingo de Luca
who died on May 15, 1563 or 450 years ago. The will was delivered to Luca’s
widow by the captain of the ship, Joan Xuarez, so that she could collect her
inheritance. Barkham made a presentation of the find in Hondarribia, Luca
and Xuarez’s hometown. To read the article in Spanish:
