Udaleku 2018 on the Horizon
Arguably one of NABO's most important initiatives, Udaleku, or Basque culture camp for kids, rotates annually between NABO's four regions. In 2018, it is the Central Region's turn with Reno's Zazpiak Bat Basque Club acting as its host. Udaleku in Reno will take place July 8-20th, followed by Reno's annual Basque festival on the July 21st so make your plans accordingly. The camp's theme also rotates by region with the Central Region concentrating on Bizkaia. The 2018 teaching team will include Lisa Corcostegui teaching culture; Eneko Espino, txistu; Monique Flesher, mus; and Jexux Larrea, dance. Newcomer to the team is Ainhoa Marauri who will teach Euskera. Local organization is led by Kate Camino, Udaleku co-chair, with help from the Zazpiak Bat Board of Directors. Cost of the 2018 camp will be $400, and an intent to participate will open on March 1st as always. Besides learning more about their Basque culture, Udaleku also provides time for fun and opportunities to learn more about the hosting club and its area. It also sets the stage for lasting friendships to be made. Udaleku updates will be made available on the website, or you can also email udaleku@nabasque.eus for further information.
William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies Anniversary
The William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Originally called the Basque Studies Program, the Center was created in 1967 as part of the Desert Research Institute at the University of Nevada, Reno. At the time, DRI was creating new programs to research aspects of the area's inhabitants and history. The idea for studying Basques was proposed since Basque-Americans were a prominent minority in the region and had contributed a great deal to its development. Bill Douglass was then hired to lead the department and served as its coordinator from 1967-1999 when he retired and became Professor Emeritus in Basque Studies. The Center was renamed in his honor in 2016. To celebrate this milestone, the Center is hosting a reception on November 8th from 4:30pm-6:30pm at the Jon Bilbao Basque Library located in the Knowledge Center. Everyone is invited to attend, and RSVPs are appreciated by November 3rd by calling 775-784-4854, or via email: basque@unr.edu. As part of the festivities, the Center is also hosting renowned Basque pianist Josu OkiƱena on November 16th who will play a recital at noon in the Knowledge Center's Rotunda. More information on that event is forthcoming. On behalf of everyone at NABO we would like to congratulate everyone at the Center, present and past, on this great achievement. Zorionak eta segi hola hola!
