Club Event Cancellations

CancelledOver the last few days, we have received news from several of our Basque clubs regarding cancellations of Mus Tournaments and annual festivals.  Here are the latest cancellations: Susanville Mus scheduled for April 25th; Los Banos Basque Club Picnic scheduled for May 17th; Kern County Basque Festival on Memorial Day Weekend, May 23-24, 2020; San Francisco Basque Club Picnic scheduled for June 7th; Winnemucca Basque Festival scheduled for June 12-14; and Elko’s National Basque Festival scheduled for July 3-5, 2020.  None of these clubs came to these decisions easily, but did so in order to look out for the health and well-being of their communities, and the Basque community as a whole.  All will be ready to come back bigger and better next year!

NABO Event Cancellations

NABOIn the same way, NABO Udaleku and the New England Basque Club have also decided to cancel Udaleku 2020, as well as this year’s NABO Convention planned for August 14-15, 2020. In the case of Udaleku, participants whose last year of eligibility would have been this year will be allowed to participate in next year’s Udaleku hosted by the Kern County Basque Club.  Everyone will need to register again for next year’s camp beginning with the Intent to Participate on March 1st as usual. The New England Basque Club is working on an alternative date, and even the possibility of working with next year’s convention hosts to work out a plan for next summer.  More information will be available on the NABO Website as it becomes available.  Although disappointing for all, these decisions were made with everyone’s best interests in mind.

Gaztemundu 2020

GaztemunduOn a brighter note, the Basque Government has announced that it is still planning to hold Gaztemundu 2020 in the fall.  Gaztemundu is comprised of a two-week stay in the Basque Country and training in any number of areas.  The program, organized annually by the Basque Government, is for youth between the ages of 18 and 35 from Basque clubs all around the world.  This year, fifteen youth will have the opportunity to travel to Euskal Herria to learn more about Basque cooking while getting to know the country better.  The Governing Council of the Basque Government has given the green light to the 2020 program, although due to the Coronavirus, the specific dates may need to be confirmed later on. The deadline for applications begins the day after the announcement is published in the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country and runs for a month.  We will let you know as soon as this occurs.

Basque Government Grants for Those in Extreme Need

Eusko JaurlaritzaAlthough the call for the Basque Government’s grant program for individuals in dire need was published yesterday in the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country (BOPV-EHA), there is now a suspension and renewal of terms, in force due to the Coronavirus. This means that the deadline that normally would have been May 15th, will now be calculated once the alert is lifted.  The grant program has a budget of 202,000 Euros and is aimed at individuals in situations of dire need.  Applications must come from Basque clubs, not the individuals themselves, and so interested persons should get in touch with their Basque club or the one closest to them in order to start the process. Complete information on the Secretary General of Foreign Action's website.
