Anna Aguirre (1951-2020) Goian Bego
This week we were deeply saddened to hear of another loss in our Basque community. Anna Aguirre passed away on May 8th after a long battle with cancer. Anna had been heavily involved in NABO as a delegate from the Eusko Etxea of New York, taking over for her parents, Irene and Andoni Aguirre, and then went on to represent the Society for Basque Studies in America, often accompanying Emilia Doyaga to our meetings. Later, she was also involved in the New York Eusko Etxea’s Centennial Celebration in 2013, when she also received our Bizi Emankorra Award. She was also a supporter of the International Basque Cultural Center that unfortunately, never came to fruition. Anna was vibrant and always a welcomed addition to our meetings. She was so intelligent and held so much of the history of the New York Basque Club and community as a whole, as well as all of ours, owing to her involvement in the SBSA, and its Halls of Fame that took place all over the country. She has left a void and so on behalf of everyone at NABO, we would like to extend our most sincere condolences to all of her family and friends. May she rest in peace, Goian Bego. Enrique Arana, Eusko Etxea Vice-President, also provided this information that includes more of Anna’s involvement in her community. Eskerrik asko to Enrique as well.
