Bertsolaritza News

This week we are happy to share a note from NABO’s latest initiative: Bertsolaritzari Arnasa Berritu Amerikan. Do you know that Bertsolaritza, the art of improvisation through song, can be learned in the US?  It sure can via the Arnas Berri Bertso Eskola, a school that was launched in September, 2022. The "Bertsolaritzari Arnasa Berritu Amerikan" (bring new breath to bertsolaritza in America) initiative continues to organize bertso events in order to promote this art form and share it in our community, making it accessible via translations into English happening in real-time (during live performances) and post-performance for recorded events. click here to see what we mean: this was in Boise during San Iñazio, and includes a fantastic introduction provided by John Ysursa about bertsolaritza and what happens on the stage. The next event will be in Kantari Eguna in Gardnerville. If you are interested in learning more about this art form contact arnasberri@gmail.com : the teachers are flexible and eager to meet anyone with interest.

Boiseko Ikastola 25th Anniversary

IkastolaPlease join the Boiseko Ikastola on Monday, August 14th in celebrating its 25th anniversary at Payette Brewing Company, as part of its Kegs4Kause event. In 1998, a few Boise families had the idea to open a Basque language preschool for their children to be able learn or continue the Basque language and perhaps preserve the culture for another generation. In the fall of the same year, Boiseko Ikastola opened its doors to about one dozen students, some of Basque ancestry and some not. Since then, there have been more than 30 teachers from the Basque Country, several directors and aides both from the US and Basque Country, and more than 300 students have attended the Boiseko Ikastola. Monday’s event begins at 6pm and 50% of the evening's proceeds will go directly to the Ikastola.  The Lieutenant Governor of Idaho will also be on hand to proclaim August 14th as Boiseko Ikastola Day. The Oinkari Basque Dancers, many of which are alumni of Boiseko Ikastola, will also perform, followed by dancing the evening away with the Kalimotxo Cowboys! There will also be food trucks on site. This event is open to all ages!

The festivities will begin at 10:30am at the CVIC Hall with mass celebrated by Aita Antton Egiguren with the participation of local dancers and a Klika.  Immediately following mass, NABO President Jean Flesher will present Anita Izoco with the NABO’s Bizi Emankorra, or Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition of her many years of service not only at the local level, but also in NABO serving as its delegate for nearly 40 years, as well as organizing Kantari Eguna since its inception in 1990.  Following the presentation, there will be a Youth Flash Mus Tournament. Interested teams are asked to please register before mass at the ticket table.  Lunch will be served at 1pm and at 3pm the Mendiko Euskaldun Cluba dancers will perform.  The Kantaldia will follow and txorizo sandwiches will be available for sale at 6pm.  There will be a public dance beginning at 8pm to the music of Manuela and Jean Pierre Etchechury with Jean Flesher.
