New Basque Mural in Reno

Reno Basque MuralThe City of Reno was proud to officially unveil the new Basque Mural located at the Barbara Bennett Park in downtown Reno.  The mural was the result of collaboration between Basque artists, Leire Urbeltz and Jaione Inda, who received funding from the Government of Navarre to support their efforts.  They worked closely with Megan Berner, Reno’s Arts and Cultural Manager who also reached out to the Center for Basque Studies at UNR.  The artists spent nearly four months in Reno coming up with ideas and working with the city to find an appropriate spot for the mural.  A brain-storming session was even held to gather public input on the project as well.  On Monday, October 30th, the final product was dedicated at 4pm. The event included an explanation by Leire Urbeltz about the whole process, as well as bertsos sung by local bertsolari, Jesus Goñi.

“The mural depicts aspects of the Basque community and experience in Reno. It includes references to the downtown city skyline, Basque shepherds, the literary contributions of Basques in Nevada, the landscape, the Basque boarding houses and restaurants, and other aspects of the culture including food and dance.” As Berner said, “Many people don’t realize the strong Basque influence that is woven throughout our history, this mural is a colorful and impressive reminder of our roots, and I am proud that we are adding this work of art to our public art collection.” Mila esker handi bat to everyone who made this possible.

Fall NABO Meeting

NABOBesides hosting their annual Mortzilla dinner, Bazaar and Bingo Night, the Boise Euzkaldunak are also busy this weekend hosting the NABO fall meeting. The meeting will gather delegates from NABO’s 41-member organizations in person or via Zoom, at the Basque Block’s Leku Ona Restaurant. This will be newly elected president, Jean Flesher’s, first meeting and promises to be a productive one. Besides reviewing the minutes from the last meeting, treasurer’s report and committee reports, the fall meeting is also when the NABO Euskara Coordinator and NABO Facilitator are hired. They need to work fast though because the meeting will be shortened to provide attendees an opportunity to tour the Basque Museum & Cultural Center before proceeding to the Basque Center for the evening’s events.
