Inauguration of Plaza Urrutia in Grand Junction
Last weekend, the City of Grand Junction Colorado, along with the Colorado Euskal Etxea and NABO Pilota, inaugurated Plaza Urrutia as an official Historic Site in the state. On the verge of being razed for other city uses, the local Basque community, along with city officials and the Colorado Euskal Etxea fought hard for its preservation.聽Grand Junction has a long history in NABO, having been one of the organization’s charter members, often represented by Jean Urruty who the Plaza is named after Zorionak to everyone who made last weekend possible!聽 For more information, here’s an article that appeared in the Colorado Sun.
Kern County 80th Anniversary and NABO Convention
This weekend join the Kern County Basque Club to celebrate its 80th Anniversary in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of its annual Festival, and this year’s NABO Convention.聽 The festivities will begin on Friday with the annual NABO Convention Meeting, followed by the presentation of the 2024 Al Erquiaga Bizi Emankorra, or lifetime achievement award.聽 Saturday’s events will include Mus, NABO Pilota finals, a concert by Esti Markez Taldea, NABO’s Txerriki Contest, Pilotaris from the Basque Country, a concert by Esti Markez Taldea, dinner, traditional dance performances, and a public dance to the music of Glitterfox and Luhartz, a Bakersfield tradition, from the Basque Country.聽 Sunday will begin with mass with the participation of the local Klika and choir, another concert by Esti Markez, lunch, NABO’s G芒teau Basque Contest, more traditional dancing, and more pilota.聽 For a complete schedule of events, and more information, click here.

Txerriki and Gateau Contests at NABO Convention
This weekend, at the NABO Convention and Kern County Basque Club festival, folks will have the opportunity to show off their best Txerriki, (Txorizo, Lukainka, Tripota/Odolkia) as well as their best G芒teau Basque!聽 NABO’s annual Txerriki contest will take place on Saturday, May 25th with registration beginning at 2pm at the outdoor BBQ area, and the contest will begin at 3pm.聽 On Sunday, the best bakers will have their chance to pit their best G芒teaus against each other!聽 This will take place on Sunday, May 26th with check-in following mass, next to the outdoor ticket booth. New NABO Spotify List
NABO’s Music Chair, Mikaela Goicoechea, has created another NABO Spotify Playlist for everyone to enjoy!聽 This one is called “Gaurko Abestiak - Udaberria/Uda 2024,” and features 20 songs that are “up and coming, currently popular, and/or have recently been topping the charts in Euskal Herria.” Entzun eta Gozatu!
