Euskal Lagunak Cornhole Tournament

New England Basque Diaspora Celebration
If you are on the east coast, please join the New England Basque Club on Sunday, September 13th at 11am for its Basque Diaspora Day celebration. The event will take place on Merchants Row, in Boston, MA and will include a casual meet and greet for coffee with fellow Basques, or anyone interested in the Basque culture. Ontario, Oregon Basque Club's Diasporaren Eguna
On the occasion of Basque Diaspora Day, our friends at Ontario, Oregon Basque Club enjoyed a special edition of their monthly Sustraiak presentation. After a summary of the origins of the celebration, and in response to some members’ curiosity about the Basque roots of Mexico’s soccer World Cup coach Javier Aguirre Onaindia, Dr. Lisa Corcostegui explored the connections between this prominent member of the Basque diaspora in Mexico and the club’s own members. Since Aguirre’s ancestors hail from Ispaster, Gernika, Nabarniz, and Iurreta among other places in Bizkaia, it was a pretty good bet that ancestral connections would exist. As it turned out, thirteen members share ancestry with Aguirre. The member with the closest relationship was a fourth cousin, meaning that she shares common third-great-grandparents with Aguirre. Another member can claim him as her fifth cousin, and the remaining eleven members were seventh cousins, meaning that they share sixth-great-grandparents from Ispaster, Gizaburuaga, Aulesti, and Lekeitio. After discovering their ancestral relationships, members learned more about their new-found cousin Javier, his family, and his career as a footballer and coach. This connection with a member of the diaspora in a different country made this Diaspora Day a little more personal for club members, especially the soccer fans.
Santa Rosa Basque Club Festival
Please join the Santa Rosa Basque Club this Saturday, September 12th at the Paradise Valley Firemen’s Park for its annual festival. The festivities will begin at noon with mass celebrated by Aita Antton, followed by an afternoon full of Basque rural sports, dancing, games, and of course lots of good food and drink.
