Casting Call for Children of Guernica
The short film, Children of Guernica, by Begoña Echeverria, Annika Speer, and Jacqueline Postajian, and based on the play Picasso Presents Gernika, also by Begoña Echeverria is now looking for cast members. The film is about a notable art therapist’s journey to answer many questions about her past when she finds out that she was a child refugee following the 1937 bombing of Gernika. National Basque Festival in Elko
If you are in Elko over the 4th of July, please join our friends at the Elko Euzkaldunak Basque Club for a weekend that is full of events for all ages during their 61st annual National Basque Festival July 5th and 6th. The weekend festivities will begin on July 3rd at the Star Hotel with a “Kickoff to the Kickoff” event at the hotel West Courtyard. The bar opens at 5pm with dancing to begin at 6pm to the music of Amerikanuak and Mercedes Mendive. On Friday, July 4th, the clubhouse will be the site of this year’s Udaleku Final Performance, in the afternoon, with the “official” festival kickoff taking place at the Ogi Deli, Bar & Pintxos - Basque and American Favorites, beginning at 4:30pm. On Saturday, there will be Golf Tournament beginning at 8am at the Ruby Mt. Golf Course and the Festival Kick-Off will be at 2pm at the Elko Basque Clubhouse. Join them in the City Park at 6pm for Handball, and a public dance Saturday night beginning at 9pm. Sunday’s events begin at 9am again at the City Park for more pilota followed by a Sheepherder’s Bread Contest at the clubhouse and Mass at 11am celebrated in Basque and English. The afternoon will include lunch and dance performances by the local dance group and rural sports, Herri Kirolak, exhibitions. For a full list of events and venues, click here.
Southern California Basque Club Picnic
If you are in the Chino area, please join the Southern California Basque Club for its 79th Annual Picnic, on Sunday, July 6th at Brinderson Hall at the Chino Fairgrounds. The festivities will begin with mass at 11am with the participation of local Basque dancers and Klika. The afternoon will include performances by the local dancers and Klika, Basque vendors, and a Gateaux Basque, and Irrintzi contest. A Lamb BBQ dinner will be served at 5pm followed by a public dance to the tunes of Amerikanuak, yes Amerikanuak who will travel from Elko to join the celebration! Mallea's More Than Sheepherders Book Signing
The University of Nevada Press is happy to announce that Dr. Joxe Mallea will be give a book talk and sign copies of his latest work More than Sheepherders at the Northeastern Nevada Museum in Elko on July 4th at 1:30pm.
